Read or Roast: April 2023

Hi Everyone!

Welcome back to Read or Roast: a monthly post to forcehelp me to reach my goal of having a maximum of one hundred books in my Goodreads TBR by the end of 202223.

Every month I’ll go through my TBR and pick one book I want to read, and one book to roast in Dragon Fire!* You can check out the last post here.

*Important Disclaimer: absolutely no books will be burned in making of this meme. I’m a dragon, not a monster.

Read or Roast…?

Live fast, die young.

Tam Hashford is tired of working at her local pub, slinging drinks for world-famous mercenaries and listening to the bards sing of adventure and glory in the world beyond her sleepy hometown.

When the biggest mercenary band of all rolls into town, led by the infamous Bloody Rose, Tam jumps at the chance to sign on as their bard. It’s adventure she wants – and adventure she gets as the crew embark on a quest that will end in one of two ways: glory or death.

It’s time to take a walk on the wyld side.

THE VERDICT…..?

The author put a pun in the summary and that’s really all I need to make this an automatic keep.

As if that wasn’t incentive enough, this book is also the sequel to Kings of the Wyld by Nicholas Eames, a book I reviewed way back in 2020 (seriously!) and yet still one I adore to this day. How could I possibly say no to book two when there are more owlbears to be found?!

Read or Roast…?

Five royal houses will hear the call to compete in the Trial for the dragon throne. A liar, a soldier, a servant, a thief, and a murderer will answer it. Who will win?

When the Emperor dies, the five royal houses of Etrusia attend the Call, where one of their own will be selected to compete for the throne. It is always the oldest child, the one who has been preparing for years to compete in the Trial. But this year is different. This year, these five outcasts will answer the call….

THE LIAR: Emilia must hide her dark magic or be put to death.

THE SOLDIER: Lucian is a warrior who has sworn to never lift a sword again.

THE SERVANT: Vespir is a dragon trainer whose skills alone will keep her in the game.

THE THIEF: Ajax knows that nothing is free–he must take what he wants.

THE MURDERER: Hyperia was born to rule and will stop at nothing to take her throne.

THE VERDICT…..?

It’s not you, House of Dragons, it’s me. I put you on my TBR literally years ago and proceeded to forget you even existed until I started digging and pulled you from the depths.

At this point, I think I need to face facts and let you go, you deserve a reader who will actually read you, and not make empty promises while you sit forgotten on a shelf.

Also your summary isn’t really inspiring me like it used to – maybe I’m just not into Dragon Empires and trials anymore.

Sorry House of Dragons, consider yourself dumpedroasted.

Current Number of Books in my TBR: 275

Once again, the number has somehow gone up from last time instead of down. I’d say it’s not my fault there are so many amazing books I want to read… but it is my fault for not reading them already!

Let’s see how we do next month.

Thanks for reading everyone!
