Read or Roast: March 2022

Hi Everyone!

Welcome back to Read or Roast: a monthly post to forcehelp me to reach my goal of having a maximum of one hundred books in my Goodreads TBR by the end of 2022. Every month I’ll go through my TBR and pick at least one book I want to actually read, and one book to roast in Dragon Fire!*

… Well, I’ll give it a try anyway. Let’s have a look at this month’s contestants!

*Important Disclaimer: absolutely no books will be burned in making of this meme. I’m a book dragon not a monster.

Read or Roast…?

Shielded by KayLynn Flanders

For fans of Sorcery of Thorns and Furyborn comes a thrilling new fantasy about a kingdom ravaged by war, and the princess who might be the key to saving not only those closest to her, but the kingdom itself, if she reveals the very secret that could destroy her.

The kingdom of Hálendi is in trouble. It’s losing the war at its borders, and rumors of a new, deadlier threat on the horizon have surfaced. Princess Jennesara knows her skills on the battlefield would make her an asset and wants to help, but her father has other plans.

As the second-born heir to the throne, Jenna lacks the firstborn’s–her brother’s–magical abilities, so the king promises her hand in marriage to the prince of neighboring Turia in exchange for resources Hálendi needs. Jenna must leave behind everything she has ever known if she is to give her people a chance at peace.

Only, on the journey to reach her betrothed and new home, the royal caravan is ambushed, and Jenna realizes the rumors were wrong–the new threat is worse than anyone imagined. Now Jenna must decide if revealing a dangerous secret is worth the cost before it’s too late–for her and for her entire kingdom.

THE VERDICT…..?

Considering this book is advertised as “for fans of Sorcery of Thorns” and the fact that I love the concept of that book (and Margaret Robertson in general), I think it’s a pretty forgone conclusion that I’ll enjoy this one. At the very least it deserves another round on my shelves. Read it is!

Read or Roast…?

The Other Side of the Sky by Amie Kaufman & Meagan Spooner

New York Times bestselling author duo Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner have crafted a gripping tale of magic and logic, fate and choice, and a deadly love. Perfect for fans of Laini Taylor and Brandon Sanderson.

Prince North’s home is in the sky, in a gleaming city held aloft by intricate engines, powered by technology. Nimh is the living goddess of her people on the Surface, responsible for providing answers, direction—hope.

North’s and Nimh’s lives are entwined—though their hearts can never be. Linked by a terrifying prophecy and caught between duty and fate, they must choose between saving their people or succumbing to the bond that is forbidden between them.

THE VERDICT…..?

To be honest, I was always on the fence about this one, even when I added it. The concept of flying cities is always cool, don’t get me wrong, but after reading a few reviews it just doesn’t sound like it will live up to it’s promise.

It had such a gorgeous cover that I felt like I had to give it a shot, but unfortunately, I just don’t have the interest anymore. I’ll be sorry to see it go, but this one’s for the Roast.

Current Number of Books in my TBR: 260. My stellar progress continues.

Thanks for reading everyone!
