Top Five Tropes I Can’t Get Enough Of

Top 5 Tuesday is a weekly meme created by Shanah @Bionic Book Worm, and is now being hosted by Meeghan @Meeghan Reads. You can check out last week’s post here!

We’re out of spooky season, so that’s it for the spooky topics for now. Instead, to start November off, we have the top five tropes I can’t get enough of. I chose some of my all time favourites, but it was harder than I thought to chose just five!

Let’s talk tropes!

Top Five Tropes I Can’t Get Enough Of

Found Family/Family of Choice

There’s the family you’re born into – which can be amazing, don’t get me wrong – and then there’s the family you choose. There’s something so comforting about the idea that you can create your own, loving family filled with the people who support and understand you just as you are. And if it helps them save the day? Even better.

Heel-Face Turn / Bad Guy Redemption

Everyone loves a good redemption by death moment, but I love it even more when the villain has to live with the consequences of their actions. And hopefully try to do better. It isn’t easy, and it’s so hard to do it effectively, but when it’s done well, it’s done really well. No final act of heroism here, but lots of hard work to become a better person, and a long battle to convince everyone you’ve changed.

Badass Normal

Much as I love enchanted swords, and epic magic, I also love when a character faces down literal gods and demons with nothing but their hard earned skills and determination. They have a mission and they’re going to see it through no matter what. Maybe it’s the idea that someone will go to any lengths, face down any evils, and succeed regardless of the odds that makes me love this trope so much. Who doesn’t love rooting for the underdog?

Deadpan Snarker

It’s odd that I get so much joy out of a character who’s meant to be the most cynical of the cast, but that’s honestly part of the charm. I’ll always appreciate any character who can insult you in ten ways with less words, and leave you speechless as they make a dramatic exit. It’s probably because I could never be so devastating on demand, but at least I can enjoy it through this trope!

Enemies to Lovers

I cannot get enough of this trope. It’s probably my favourite of the entire lot, and what’s not to love. All that delightful tension, mixed with some truly fantastic character development, transforms the bitterest of enemies / rivals into the most amazing partners. Almost all of my favourite pairings are some form of this trope, and if I see a novel that promises this, I’ll grab it right off the shelves. It’s a trope I can’t possibly resist, and I’m not going to try.

Are there any tropes here you enjoy as well? Or am I completely wrong here? Let me know in the comments below.

Thanks for reading everyone!

  1. Bad-Guy Redemption is hit or miss for me, but I know my absolute favourite of this (and it’s executed perfectly) in Avatar: The Last Airbender. And I know it’s a tv show, but it is the BEST version of this. Hands down. I hope you had fun this week 💕
