Well, January’s already over, and if I can say nothing else about this new year, it’s that it’s off to a really great start… in terms of the books I’ve read at least.
I got through five books this month and loved almost all of them (sorry Crown of One Hundred Kings). And one of them in particular is in the running for a new favourite!

The Book: A Touch of Death
The Author: Rebecca Crunden
The Series: The Outlands Pentalogy #1
Published: February 23, 2017
Publisher: Self-published
My Rating: 3.5/5
This was the first requested book review I’ve ever done and I was so grateful to the author for giving me the opportunity.
This was a lot of fun to read and review, and while it had a few rough patches, it still holds up as a great start to a very interesting series.

The Book: Red Sister
The Author: Mark Lawrence
The Series: Book of the Ancestor #1
Published: April 4, 2017
Publisher: Ace Books
My Rating: 4/5
While it might be a bit more slowly paced than some of Mark Lawrence’s other works, this story has all the great parts about dark, gritty, brutal settings, without going overboard for squeamish readers like me. If you want to give grimdark a try, I think this is a great place to start.

The Book: Stormdancer
The Author: Jay Kristoff
The Series: The Lotus War #1
Published: August 21, 2012
Publisher: Thomas Dunne Books
Rating: 4.5/5
After languishing in my TBR pile for literally year, Stormdancer was patiently waiting all this time to absolutely floor me with it’s sheer awesomeness. Although it has a bit of a rough start, this is still a severely underrated book and one that deserves way more attention and praise.

The Book: Crown of One Hundred Kings
The Author: Rachel Higginson
The Series: Nine Kingdoms Trilogy #1
Published: October 27, 2020
Publisher: Reckless Siren Publishing
My Rating: 2/5
I was really looking forward to this one, but I just didn’t feel the story lived up to the summary or to that gorgeous cover art. It’s not something I enjoyed, but I can see why others might be able to enjoy it.

The Book: Spellbreaker
The Author: Charlie N. Holmberg
The Series: Spellbreaker Duology #1
Published: November 1, 2020
Publisher: 47North
My Rating: 4.5/5
This one was an absolute joy to read, and I’m glad I managed to end the month on such a high note with this one. It’s clever, witty, and has a leading heroine whom I absolutely adore. The next book is coming out soon and I will be first in line for a copy.
I was really happy with how this month turned out. I got to read some amazing books, and I continue to meet some wonderful readers, bloggers, and generally amazing people who enjoy reading as much as I do. Thank you so much to each and every one of you who reads this little blog and supports me with your views, likes, and comments. It means so much, and makes me want to make this blog even better in the future.
Have a happy February everyone!
February TBR
